Studies show that you are 23 times more likely to be involved in an accident when texting and driving. Approaching one of the most dangerous days on the road, New Year’s Eve, AT&T today announced the release of a powerful new documentary featuring stories from individuals whose lives have been altered by texting while driving.
I’ve already shared this video with several of my friends and I thought everyone here should watch it too.
There is no way I can sit here and tell you I have never texted while driving, but it’s videos like this that really hit home and show you how stupid it is. Google Maps Navigation is the most useful GPS software I have ever used, but it is also the most dangerous (I guess that’s why they still call it beta). Thanks to Google’s excellent notifications system, you are constantly bombarded with text messages, email alerts, Tweets, and Facebook updates while you are driving.
What do you think Google could do to help with the texting and driving problem?

It really makes me think. Ive texted and drove loads of times, even had a near miss. But this. shows me the effect of that stupidity from other people and families lives. It will certainly make me think in the future.
There must be some underlying mental block in the people who would even consider texting while driving. A fundamental lack of judgement and awareness of the sheer folly.
Even holding a conversation with someone in the same car brings a degree pf risk, if that conversation distracts the driver from what is happening on the road ahead.
Operating any device other than the controls of the car is a risky action. If that involves taking your eyes off the road _and_ shifting your mental attention from driving to a text conversation, it has got to be a danger. Texting while driving is symptomatic of an irresponsible attitude towards other road users.
People caught doing this should be banned from driving.
The issue is that people nowadays more and more just think only about themselves. When you drive, you should think about all the other people on the road and that you don’t want them to get hurt either.
“Thinking more about other people” is what the new year’s resolution should be…
“What do you think Google could do to help with the texting and driving problem?”
Not sell phones to adults with so little self control they feel like they have to answer their damn phones every time they play “Who Let the Dogs Out?”
Not really a problem for me, personally. I just don’t answer my phone or make phone calls while driving. I will allow myself to do so, perhaps, the day I am racing to defuse a nuclear weapon and the CIA and FBI are arguing over which route I should take to get around traffic.
2011: No Texting & Driving .
Perfect New Year’s Resolution don’t you guys think!(:
The video, like many others, is to bring the problem to light, the more its acknowledged, the more people will refrain from doing so. Its not supposed to solve the problem. Do we really need to trick and minipulate our selves when all it takes is putting the phone down for a sec. I was told prevention is cheaper than the cure. In this case, it still holdes true. Not to preach, but sometimes we all get to caught up with technology and life, we forget whats really going on around us. Anyways, Happy New Years everyone, be safe
I agree to an extent .. I consider my self to be a pretty smart person and rather rational .. and I am still tempted to text while driving and have done so on a number of occasions. I don’t normally take these ” red asphalt ” videos seriously and probably have been desensitized like you .. But for some reason this one resonated with me … to the point that I even posted it on Facebook which I NEVER do … like a previous poster said if it makes one person realize then it is worth it .
This is a very tough video. I hope more people take it seriously
You aren’t the only one, man. I posted twice. WordPress is a mess. Never liked it.
