Remember when everyone was talking about a follow-up to the Xperia Arc called the Xperia Arc HD? Well, this topic has just come back, as the recent trailer to the latest Resident Evil movie includes a mystery Sony device. This is certainly a Sony Xperia unit, as shown on its case and the design looks a lot like the one of the Arc, but which model is it?

I’ve published below an older render that used to go around the web for a while at the end of 2011. This one was supposed to be the Sony Xperia Arc HD or the Xperia Curve as some called it. Some people even thought it was the Xperia Nypon, but recent leaks have dismissed that. Having in mind the recently leaked roadmap of Sony phones for 2012, I can’t really imagine where this model fits in, specially with those physical keys, that contrast the preinstallation of Android Ice Cream Sandwich on it.

Worst case scenario, this is a mere Xperia Arc model with Sony branding instead of Sony Ericsson, but pulling such a stunt would only confuse the public, who may feel the need to choose between Sony and SE. I say it’s the final Arc model, the Arc HD, with a beautiful 4.2 inch 720p display, a dual core NovaThor processor and maybe even a 12 megapixel camera. Any ideas on what the device might actually be? In the trailer below you’ll see the handset at minute 0:13.

The latest in LG mobile technology is the Spectrum handset, that’s supposed to come to Verizon on January 19. This is a LTE phone that was showcased at CES 2012 in Las Vegas this week. Previously the model was leaked as a pretty clear picture, with some specs attached to it. You can still find the device on the CES if you’re in Vegas.

We’re dealing here with a LG 4G LTE handset that features a 1.5GHz dual core processor, 1GB of RAM an 8 megapixel camera and a 4.5 inch 720p True HD IPS screen. The specs aren’t that different from the ones of the LG Nitro HD aka LG Optimus LTE, so you’re not missing anything by not purchasing it. There’s also a 1.3MP front camera and a huge 1830 mAh battery to give you enough juice for LTE and other functions. LG Spectrum runs Gingerbread for the time being, but it’s a certain candidate to receive Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich in this quarter.

The price tag of this new phone on Verizon is $199 and the launch date is, as I said, January 19th. Not that anyone has any money left from the Xmas season right now… Well, at least you can sell your older mobile and go with this one. Expect more phones from LG to come at MWC 2012.

It’s a pretty well-known fact that some Android apps out there lack a bit in the “pretty and easy-to-use” department. More often than not, these apps have well-designed counterparts on other platforms like iOS and Windows Phone. As a result, Android has always been thought of as the ugly duckling of the mobile OS family.

However, that might start to change soon. Google just announced Android Design, a website with the sole goal of helping developers make their apps look great. The site has a great deal of information on how to integrate apps with Ice Cream Sandwich, how to use all the new UI elements included in the latest version of Android, and overall tips and guidelines to keep in mind when you’re building apps. If you’re an Android developer, you should definitely check it out.

This launch is just one of the latest moves made by Google in an ongoing war against some of the biggest issues hurting the Android platform right now: fragmentation and unattractiveness to the average consumer. The company started to fight these problems with Honeycomb — and more so with Ice Cream Sandwich — but the G-Team is nowhere near done. In fact, just a few days ago we found out that the Holo Theme available on Android 4.0 is included on every device that has access to the Android Market. That plus today’s announcement make it pretty obvious that Google is quite serious about getting rid of the “ugly duckling” tag.

As it is usual with Android, these UI guidelines are not enforced in any shape or form. Developers can still go their own separate way if they choose to — for better or for worse. Having said that, I wouldn’t be surprised if Google decides to highlight those apps that stick to the official UI guidelines, while penalizing those apps that don’t.

Verizon’s latest minimum advertised pricing (MAP) list has added two devices that are no doubt on everyone’s short list for the holidays. The fan favorite has to be the Galaxy Nexus (Prime), but the HTC Rezound (Vigor) is no slouch in the specs department and HTC certainly has a loyal following amongst the Android faithful.

Considering what these phones have to offer it will probably come as no surprise that they are grabbing Verizon’s top pricing at $299 on a 2-year contract. We had a nice run there when $199 was the worst they would do to us, but clearly those days are gone for now.

The second piece of information comes as a bit of a disappointment to me as it pegs the launch for both devices as November 10th. It’s nice to have something on the calendar to stare at, but I had really hoped that it would be a little closer than that. Now until Verizon, Google, Samsung and/or HTC comes right out and tells us the launch date we can’t be certain, but the MAP launch date for the Bionic was dead on and in most cases when the dates on these lists are wrong it’s because the device gets delayed.

Does $299 seem like a fair price for these devices to you? How does the November 10th release date sit with you? Should they have pushed to get it closer to the iPhone’s release or is just making sure it is out in time for the holidays good enough?
